The American Institute of CPAs recently announced the winners of the 2012 AICPA Accounting Competition in Washington, D.C. Students from the University of Texas at Dallas won first place and received a $10,000 award.
For this year’s competition, teams from around the country had to advise a hypothetical presidential candidate on solutions for some of the nation’s biggest economic concerns, including Social Security, the national deficit and income tax.
“CPAs are known for proposing creative and intelligent solutions to complex problems,” said Richard Caturano, CPA, CGMA, AICPA Chairman. “I was impressed with the quality of the proposals the finalists presented, as well as their ability to articulate their vision in an engaging and easy-to-understand manner. The skills they demonstrated will serve them well throughout their careers in the profession.” Caturano announced the winners in Washington, D.C.
Twenty proposals were selected for the semifinals from the initial proposals submitted by student teams around the country. The semifinalists submitted video proposals, which were posted on ThisWayToCPA.com for the public to vote on. The finalists were selected based on voter results and a review of an executive judging panel. During the finals, the three teams presented to a panel of judges and participated in a question and answer session.
Members of the winning team, named Working Capitol, are team captain, April Crawford, Shahrzad Azimi, Trey Sweeney, Samuel Teichelman and faculty advisor, John Barden. Second place went to students from Albion College who received a $5,000 award and students from North Carolina State University received the third place $2,500 award.
